NADRA Declares Digital Identity Card Equal to Physical CNIC

Karachi (HRNW)- The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has clarified that the digital identity card carries the same legal status as the physical CNIC, urging government offices and institutions to accept it as valid proof of identity.

According to a NADRA spokesperson, some government departments and institutions are still demanding physical identity cards or photocopies instead of digital versions, which is against the existing legal and regulatory framework.

The spokesperson explained that digital identity regulations were introduced under the NADRA Ordinance, and Regulations 9 and 10 grant full legal status to digital identity documents, making them officially valid proof of identity.

NADRA stated that the digital identity card helps reduce unnecessary photocopying of CNICs, while also protecting citizens’ personal data and preventing misuse of identity information.

The authority has directed all government departments, public institutions, financial organizations, and telecom operators to ensure compliance with these regulations. Citizens facing issues can file complaints through NADRA’s official complaint system.
