Lahore (HRNW) — The use of an official aircraft during Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s recent London visit continues to draw public and political attention, with questions being raised over why the discussion is limited to the aircraft costs if the trip was entirely private.
Maryam Nawaz travelled to London to attend the graduation ceremony of her daughter, Mahnoor Safdar. Following her return to Pakistan, her daughter’s Nikah ceremony was also held at Jati Umra, Lahore, on September 13.
According to a recent report concerning the use of the official aircraft, the challan issued in Maryam Nawaz’s name was reportedly amended twice, with the final challan showing Rs27,194,004 as the cost of using the official aircraft. However, there has so far been no independent confirmation that this amount has actually been deposited into the government treasury.
The Punjab government has maintained that the Chief Minister personally paid all expenses of her London trip. Meanwhile, the issue of the alleged private use of the official aircraft and related expenditure has also been raised in the Punjab Assembly, where clarification has been sought.
The central question, however, is: Why should the discussion remain limited to the cost of the official aircraft?
If, as the government maintains, the London trip was entirely private and all expenses were borne personally by the Chief Minister, then details of other relevant expenses—including accommodation, travel facilities, hotel costs and other associated expenditures—could also be made public in the interest of transparency.
The issue is not about anyone’s daughter attending a graduation ceremony or holding a family wedding. The question concerns transparency in the use of public office and government resources.
If the government’s position is that the trip placed no financial burden on the public treasury, making the relevant payment records, receipts and official documents available could help address the questions being raised.
Therefore, the question is not only who will pay the Rs27,194,004 cost of the official aircraft, but also: Where is the complete financial account of the London trip?
Transparency regarding public resources should not be limited to aircraft expenses. Any use of government resources should be properly documented, with clear and verifiable information available to the public.
