Prince Albert (HRNW)- At least 21 people were killed and four others critically injured in a multi-vehicle accident in South Africa’s Western Cape province.
The local Road Traffic Management Corporation said the crash occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time on the N1 highway and involved two minibuses and a station wagon.
The collision took place between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, prompting authorities to close the highway in both directions. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes, expect delays, and exercise extreme caution.
Minibus taxis are a major form of public transportation in South Africa, with 14-seater vehicles carrying millions of passengers each day to workplaces, schools, towns, and across provincial and national borders.
Authorities continue to manage the aftermath of the crash as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision proceed.
