Kyiv (HRNW)- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has removed General Oleksandr Seryozha as the head of the country’s armed forces and appointed veteran General Mykhailo Dropati as the new army chief.
According to international news agencies, the decision comes as protests continue across Ukraine following the dismissal of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
According to a statement issued by the Presidential Office, 60-year-old General Oleksandr Seryozha has been relieved of his duties, while 43-year-old General Mykhailo Dropati, regarded as a respected battlefield commander with extensive military experience, has been appointed to lead the armed forces.
Reports before the dismissal suggested differences between General Seryozha and former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov over military reforms and command strategy. Although these reports were initially denied, they were later confirmed.
Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov had gained widespread public support for introducing modern reforms in the defense sector, restructuring the armed forces, and implementing anti-corruption measures.
Following his dismissal, protests continued for six days in several cities, including Kyiv, with demonstrators demanding changes in the military leadership.
General Mykhailo Dropati is widely regarded as a dynamic commander and an advocate of modern warfare tactics. Analysts believe his appointment could provide fresh momentum to Ukraine’s military reform efforts.
