Tehran (HRNW)- Iran has claimed that the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the airspace of the southwestern city of Ahvaz using a modern air defense system.
According to Iranian state broadcaster Press TV, the IRGC Aerospace Force targeted the US drone during an operation, causing it to crash.
The report said Iran employed a newly developed air defense system during the operation, although no technical details or specifications of the system were disclosed.
According to Iranian media, the US MQ-9 Reaper drone is primarily used for surveillance and intelligence gathering and is also capable of carrying out offensive operations.
The claim comes amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, with both sides exchanging military actions and increasingly strong rhetoric.
US officials have not yet confirmed Iran’s claim or issued an official response. Independent sources have also not been able to immediately verify the reported incident.
Defense analysts say that if Iran’s claim is confirmed, it would represent a significant development in regional air defense capabilities and drone warfare. However, they note that further evidence and official confirmation are needed before the incident can be independently verified.
