UK Introduces Emergency Plan to Tackle Potential Jet Fuel Shortage and Protect Air Travelers

London (HRNW)- The UK government has introduced a new contingency plan to address a potential jet fuel shortage, aiming to reduce disruption to air travel and minimize hardship for passengers during the busy summer travel season. According to an official government statement, airlines have been temporarily permitted to carry more passengers on fewer flights by combining multiple flights to the same destination on the same day, helping to conserve fuel and reduce the risk of last-minute cancellations. Officials said the primary goal of the measure is to ensure smoother travel operations while giving passengers more certainty about their travel plans.

Under the new policy, airlines have also been granted authority to cancel flights in the event of fuel shortages, provided they announce cancellations in advance so travelers have time to make alternative arrangements. Meanwhile, the British government is working to strengthen supply by increasing output from four domestic refineries and boosting jet fuel imports from the United States. Authorities noted that fuel supplies remain available for now, but warned that without timely action, shortages could become more serious in the coming weeks. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has also cautioned that if fuel supplies do not improve by June, broader disruptions could affect Europe’s aviation sector. Rising geopolitical tensions in key shipping routes have further impacted fuel deliveries, contributing to a steady increase in jet fuel prices at a time when millions of travelers are expected to fly abroad for summer holidays.
