KARACHI (HRNW): The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has raised an alarm regarding water availability for the upcoming Kharif crop season, indicating that Sindh and Punjab may face substantial shortages. According to IRSA, Sindh is expected to receive 29% less water, while Punjab faces a projected shortage of 31%.
The recommendations regarding water availability for 2026 were finalized during a technical committee meeting. Key findings from the report include:

Water Inflow: A total inflow of 20.356 million acre-feet was recorded between October 2025 and March 2026.

Downstream Discharge: Water discharge below Kotri was recorded at 5.596 million acre-feet, which is significantly higher than last year’s figure of 0.470 million acre-feet.

Provincial Consumption: As of March 20, 2026, the provincial utilization of water remained lower than initially planned.

Future Planning: A joint meeting of all stakeholders will be convened prior to the next IRSA advisory committee session to address these concerns.
