Punjab Re-imposes 10 PM Closing Time for Markets and Malls Amid Global Energy Crisis

LAHORE: (HRNW) The Government of Punjab has officially re-imposed a 10:00 PM closing deadline for all markets, shopping malls, and commercial establishments across the province. This decision, which takes effect tomorrow (Tuesday, March 24, 2026), marks the end of the temporary relaxation previously granted for the Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr shopping seasons.

The move is a central component of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s emergency “War Austerity Plan,” triggered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. These regional tensions have led to a severe global fuel shortage and a sharp spike in petroleum prices, forcing the provincial administration to prioritize energy conservation.

Key Implementation Details:

  • Scope of Restriction: All retail shops, wholesale markets, and shopping plazas must conclude operations by 10:00 PM.

  • Exemptions: Essential services—including pharmacies, hospitals, laboratories, petrol pumps, tandoors, and milk shops—remain exempt from these timing restrictions.

  • Enforcement: District administrations and police have been directed to ensure strict compliance. Authorities have warned that businesses found violating the order will face immediate sealing and heavy fines.

This measure follows a series of other high-level austerity steps, including the closure of educational institutions until March 31, a mandatory work-from-home policy for non-essential government staff, and a 50% reduction in fuel allowances for provincial officers. The government aims to reduce the national fuel bill while ensuring that electricity and petroleum remain available for critical sectors like healthcare and the upcoming wheat harvest.
