Karachi (HRNW)- Police detained 11 people during a protest by families of Pakistanis allegedly held hostage by Somali pirates outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office on Shahrah-e-Faisal, Karachi. The detainees included six men and five women.
According to the protesters, they were peacefully demanding the safe and immediate recovery of their loved ones and regretted the police action. Police reportedly removed the protesters’ belongings and shifted the detainees to Tipu Sultan Police Station.
Following the crackdown, relatives of the protesters reached the police station and demanded their release. An Eastern District Police spokesperson said the protest was stopped due to a security threat alert and confirmed that all detained individuals were subsequently released. Police also returned the belongings taken during the operation.
The families have called on the government to take immediate diplomatic measures for the recovery of the Pakistanis allegedly being held in Somalia and said they would continue raising their demands until action is taken.
