Beijing Meeting: Wang Yi Condemns US-Israel Military Actions as “Illegal”

Beijing (HRNW) – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has characterized the ongoing military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran as “illegal,” warning that the Middle East has entered a “decisive phase.” During a high-level meeting in Beijing on May 6, 2026, with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, Wang Yi emphasized that a complete ceasefire is now the only path toward regional stability.

Wang Yi stated that the “war against Iran lacks legitimacy and legality,” noting that such unilateral military actions violate the UN Charter and basic international norms. He stressed that direct dialogue between all involved parties is essential to de-escalate the conflict, which has severely disrupted global energy supplies and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

During the discussions, the Chinese Foreign Minister reiterated that:

  • Ceasefire is Imperative: China is “deeply distressed” by the two-month-old conflict and views a cessation of hostilities as inevitable for global peace.

  • Support for Sovereignty: Beijing supports Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security while appreciating Tehran’s willingness to seek a political solution.

  • Diplomatic Role: China will continue to act as a mediator and use its influence to push for a fair and comprehensive peace agreement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi praised China’s principled position, especially its clear condemnation of the U.S. and Israeli strikes launched on February 28. Araghchi, who is on a multi-nation diplomatic tour, affirmed that cooperation between Tehran and Beijing would strengthen further as they navigate this crisis.

This meeting comes at a critical juncture, as U.S. President Donald Trump has recently paused “Project Freedom” at the request of Pakistan, and is scheduled to visit Beijing mid-May for further talks on a comprehensive settlement.
