Karachi (HRNW) – The Supreme Court Karachi Registry heard a case regarding the formation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate multiple cases registered on the complaint of a lawyer of the Sindh High Court.
The complainant, Ghulam Asghar Sial Advocate, had approached the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the Sindh High Court.
During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner Wahab Baloch argued that complaints against lawyers fall within the jurisdiction of the Bar Council. He informed the court that the Sindh Home Department had constituted a JIT on the directions of the Sindh High Court.
The petitioner’s counsel argued that a JIT cannot be formed for investigations involving a lawyer’s matter. However, the government counsel maintained that there is no legal restriction on the formation of a JIT for investigation purposes.
Justice Musarrat Hilali asked who would be included in the JIT. The petitioner’s counsel replied that representatives of law enforcement agencies and sensitive institutions would be part of the team.
Justice Musarrat Hilali questioned what role sensitive institutions had in the matter. The government counsel responded that police officers and officials from other departments were also included in the JIT.
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice of Pakistan remarked that the matter could be referred to the Sindh Bar Council. He stated that the Sindh Bar Council should examine the JIT issue according to its own rules and regulations.
