Islamabad (HRNW): The government collected more than Rs1.47 trillion through petroleum levy and climate levy during the previous fiscal year, which helped in limiting the federal budget deficit.
According to available data, revenue generated from petroleum and climate levies enabled the government to keep the federal budget deficit at Rs3.34 trillion during the first 11 months of fiscal year 2025-26 (July to May), equivalent to around 2.6% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Under the agreement reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), provincial governments generated a surplus revenue of Rs1.31 trillion during the first eleven months of fiscal year 2025-26. As a result, the overall fiscal deficit was reduced to Rs2.03 trillion, equivalent to approximately 1.6% of GDP.
Economic experts say revenue from petroleum levies and other taxation measures continues to play an important role in meeting fiscal targets. However, they emphasize that long-term economic stability requires broader revenue reforms, controlled expenditures, and sustainable financial policies.
