Beijing (HRNW): China’s popular video-sharing platform Bilibili is accelerating efforts to expand its global presence and attract international users and content creators, positioning itself as a potential alternative to YouTube.
Reports indicate that Bilibili has simplified registration for overseas users on its international version and removed the requirement for mandatory identity-document verification. The platform is also working to provide international users with a more localized experience.
Reported $0.70 Payment Per 1,000 Views
Reports circulating on social media claim that Bilibili may offer creators approximately $0.70 per 1,000 views, equivalent to around Rs194 in Pakistani currency.
However, this payment rate has not been officially confirmed by Bilibili as a guaranteed global creator payment policy. It should therefore not be considered a confirmed or fixed income rate.
According to Chinese media outlet Global Times, Bilibili has introduced several changes to its international version to make the platform more accessible to overseas users and creators.
More Than 350 Million Monthly Active Users
Bilibili began operating in 2009 and has become particularly popular among younger users in China. The company is reported to have more than 350 million monthly active users, while some recent claims have put the figure above 370 million.
The platform’s growing international reach is also reflected in the presence of prominent creators. Popular YouTuber MrBeast began posting content on Bilibili in 2024 and is reportedly followed by approximately 8.8 million users on the platform.
Can Bilibili Become a YouTube Alternative?
Experts say challenging YouTube globally will not be easy. YouTube has already established a massive international network of creators, advertisers and viewers.
Compared with YouTube, Bilibili’s global advertising ecosystem and creator monetization structure remain relatively limited. Therefore, even a potentially higher payment per 1,000 views does not necessarily guarantee higher overall earnings for every creator.
For creators, the key questions will include not only the payment per 1,000 views but also audience growth, advertising opportunities and long-term earning potential on the platform.
Strong Communities Around Gaming, AI and Animation
Bilibili has built strong communities around animation, gaming, AI and other specialized interests. This could give international creators in these fields an opportunity to reach audiences beyond YouTube.
One of Bilibili’s distinctive features is its “Danmu” or bullet comments, through which viewers’ comments appear directly on the screen while a video is playing. The feature encourages users to participate in real-time discussions rather than simply watch videos.
Bilibili’s new Creator Hub also responded to a user on X, saying the platform welcomes people who believed in it from the beginning.
Digital Rights and Creator Opportunities
From a human rights perspective, HRNW notes that the emergence of new global platforms can create opportunities for digital expression, creator livelihoods and access to online communities. At the same time, global expansion should be accompanied by strong protections for user privacy, transparent content policies, fair compensation and creator rights.
If Bilibili succeeds in expanding its international user and creator base, competition in the global online-video market could increase significantly.
However, at this stage, the reported $0.70 per 1,000 views should not be treated as Bilibili’s confirmed global creator payment policy.
