Dhaka (HRNW)- Bangladesh has indicated that it would positively consider joining the Mecca Mutual Defense Treaty if it receives an invitation from the agreement’s founding countries.
Speaking in parliament, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said no final decision has been made regarding membership, as the matter depends on the wishes of the founding states. He added that Dhaka would carefully assess the potential benefits before making a decision.
Khalilur Rahman described the treaty as a collective defense framework for Muslim countries. Earlier, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir had also said Bangladesh was interested in joining the agreement.
The Mecca Mutual Defense Treaty was signed on August 7 by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan in Mecca. The agreement seeks to strengthen defense cooperation and collective security, including the principle that an attack on one member would be considered an attack on all.
Türkiye has previously expressed hope that Egypt could join the framework in a future phase. Bangladesh’s latest statement has further raised the possibility of expanding the treaty’s membership.
