Pakistan Urges UN to Restore Indus Waters Treaty, Calls for Council Intervention Against India

New York (HRNW)- Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council to ensure the full restoration of the Indus Waters Treaty in line with its international obligations. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar has submitted a formal letter to the United Nations against India in this regard. The letter has expressed serious reservations over India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Pakistan’s letter has said that this move by India is not only a violation of international agreements but also a serious threat to peace and stability in the region. Pakistan has appealed to the Security Council to intervene and force India to implement its international commitments and obligations.

Asim Iftikhar said that this letter was submitted on the instructions of the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, in which a clear demand for the full restoration of the Indus Waters Treaty has been made. He said that this letter has also been handed over to the President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative further said that the ongoing propaganda campaign by India against Pakistan’s mediation and peace efforts is baseless. He apprised the President of the General Assembly of this negative campaign and termed it as against the interest of international peace and security.
Asim Iftikhar also pointed out on this occasion that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute has been on the agenda of the Security Council for a long time and has been the main cause of instability in South Asia. He stressed that lasting peace in the region is not possible without a resolution of this dispute in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
