Judicial Commission to Convene on April 28 Regarding Transfer of Five Islamabad High Court Judges

ISLAMABAD (HRNW): A significant development has emerged regarding the proposed transfer of five Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges—the same jurists who previously authored a letter to former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa alleging interference in judicial affairs and the harassment of judges.

Details of the Judicial Commission Meeting:

Sources reveal that a meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has been summoned for April 28, 2026, at 1:00 PM in Islamabad to deliberate on these transfers.

  • Leadership: The session will be chaired by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Judicial Commission.

  • Attendance: All members of the commission, along with the Chief Justices of the four provincial High Courts, are expected to attend the session.

Proposed Transfer Plan:

Under the proposal currently being considered, the five IHC judges may be reassigned to various provincial High Courts:

  • Lahore High Court (LHC): Two judges are proposed for transfer to the LHC.

  • Other Provinces: The remaining three judges are under consideration for transfers to the High Courts of Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Judges Involved:

The commission will specifically review the names of Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq, and Justice Babar Sattar, alongside two other colleagues. Sources indicate that informal consultations regarding these transfers have already been completed, with the final formal decision expected during the April 28 meeting.

Legal Significance:

Legal circles are closely monitoring this development, viewing it as an extraordinary move. The matter is being linked to the broader discourse on judicial independence, the protection of judges from external pressures, and the administrative restructuring of the superior judiciary.
