Pallekele (HRNW)- The scheduled 32nd match between Zimbabwe and Ireland in the ICC T20 World Cup was cancelled due to rain, as a result of which Zimbabwe reached the Super 8 stage with one point, while Australia was eliminated from the tournament.
This match was to be played between Ireland and Zimbabwe in Pallekele, however, due to continuous rain, the umpires decided to cancel the match and awarded one point each to both teams.
Zimbabwe needed only one point to reach the Super 8, which it got after the match was canceled. After three matches, Zimbabwe’s number of points in Group B became 5. On the other hand, Australia could only get 2 points in three matches and was out of the race for the next stage.
Sri Lanka has already reached the Super 8 stage from Group B, having defeated Australia by 8 wickets yesterday and has 6 points after three matches. Earlier, Zimbabwe also caused a big upset by defeating Australia by 23 runs.
It should be noted that after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, this is the third consecutive T20 World Cup in which Australia has failed to reach the semi-finals.
