Kabul (HRNW) – Torrential rains and flash floods have caused widespread devastation in Afghanistan’s northeastern province of Nuristan, leaving at least 20 people dead, more than 80 injured, and over 100 missing, according to Afghan authorities.
Officials said the flooding severely affected Parun, the provincial capital of Nuristan, along with surrounding communities. Powerful floodwaters swept away homes, shops, roads, and other public and private property, causing extensive destruction across the region.
Rescue and emergency response teams are continuing search-and-rescue operations to locate missing persons, assist the injured, and evacuate affected residents. However, relief efforts have been complicated by the province’s mountainous terrain, damaged infrastructure, and limited access to remote communities.
Authorities warned that the death toll may rise as search operations continue. Thousands of affected residents are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, including emergency shelter, food, clean drinking water, healthcare, and other essential services.
