Islamabad (HRNW) The prices of petroleum products witnessed significant fluctuations during Jamaat-e-Islami’s protest campaign against the petroleum levy and inflation, culminating in the nationwide shutter-down strike on September 3.
According to available official price records, when Jamaat-e-Islami’s major sit-ins began on August 16, petrol was priced at Rs325.92 per litre, while High-Speed Diesel (HSD) was Rs382.25 per litre.
By the day of the nationwide strike on September 3, the petrol price had increased to Rs346.16 per litre. This represents an increase of Rs20.24 per litre, or approximately 6.2 percent, between August 16 and September 3.
In contrast, the price of HSD declined from Rs382.25 to Rs372.03 per litre, representing an overall decrease of Rs10.22 per litre during the same period, although diesel prices fluctuated considerably in between.
On September 3, the government increased the price of petrol by Rs2.29 per litre and HSD by Rs1.11 per litre, bringing the prices to Rs346.16 and Rs372.03 per litre respectively.
It is also noteworthy that some political statements claimed that petrol was Rs314 per litre when Jamaat-e-Islami launched its sit-in campaign. However, available official price records show that the price on August 16 was Rs325.92 per litre. Therefore, official notified prices provide a more reliable basis for comparison.
