Karachi (HRNW) — The Constitutional Bench of the Sindh High Court heard a petition regarding the medical treatment of Shakil Siddiqui, a high-profile convict sentenced by a military court and linked to a banned organization. The court accepted the family’s request and directed that the prisoner be shifted to Karachi for comprehensive medical care.
The court issued this order after reviewing a report from the Superintendent of Hyderabad Jail. Counsel for the petitioner stated that Shakil Siddiqui has been imprisoned since 2015 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison by a military court on various charges.
According to the petitioner, the convict has been suffering from a kidney ailment for several months, but adequate medical facilities are not available inside the jail and the prison administration has failed to provide effective healthcare. The petition requested that the prisoner be provided immediate treatment at a hospital outside jail, upon which the court ordered his transfer to Karachi for medical treatment.

HRNW stresses that providing humane treatment and basic healthcare to prisoners is a constitutional and moral obligation of the state. Regardless of the crime for which a person is convicted, they cannot be denied medical care, clean water, food and other facilities related to human dignity. Shortages, delays and negligence in prison healthcare constitute serious human rights violations.
