Sindh Government Recommends Export of Surplus Sugar

KARACHI (HRNW): The Sindh Government has officially recommended the export of surplus sugar, following a detailed assessment of national stocks provided by the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA).

The Sindh Cabinet has approved the recommendation to export 767,000 metric tons of surplus sugar and has formally informed the federal government of this decision.

Key Statistics and Stock Details:

  • Current Production: According to PSMA, 7.6 million metric tons of sugar were produced during the recent crushing season.

  • Future Estimates: An additional 0.086 million metric tons of sugar is expected to be produced from beetroot by June 2026.

  • Total Stock: The Sindh Agriculture Department informed the Cabinet that the total national sugar stock currently stands at 7.958 million metric tons.

  • National Consumption: The estimated national consumption for the next 12 months is projected to be 6.638 million metric tons.

  • Strategic Reserves: After maintaining a one-month strategic reserve of 0.539 million metric tons, sugar mills still hold a significant surplus available for export.

Federal Oversight and Audit:

  • Verification Issues: During a meeting held on April 11, the Ministry of Industries and Production expressed a lack of confidence in the initial verification of sugar stocks.

  • Third-Party Audit: With the consent of all stakeholders, the federal government has decided to conduct a third-party audit of the sugar stocks to ensure transparency.

  • Final Approval: Following the recommendation from the Sindh Government and the completion of the audit, the federal government is expected to grant formal permission for the export.

This move aims to stabilize the sugar industry and earn foreign exchange by offloading the confirmed surplus while ensuring domestic requirements and strategic reserves remain secure.
