Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon Warns Non-Compliant Markets Will Be Closed Over SOP Violations

Karachi, Pakistan (HRNW)Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has stated that the Karachi Chamber of Commerce, in coordination with the provincial government, is holding discussions with market associations to enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to fire safety and building compliance.

He warned that markets failing to implement safety SOPs would be shut down as part of the government’s enforcement measures.

Responding to a private TV channel’s question about the Karachi Mayor’s comments on weaknesses in the Gul Plaza fire safety audit, the minister said, “I am not aware of when or where the Mayor made that statement, but the government’s role is to take action — and we will act where SOPs are violated.”

It is noteworthy that Mayor Karachi had stated a day earlier during a media talk that traders were advised to implement safety measures, but strict enforcement was avoided to prevent criticism from the media accusing the administration of being unfair to the business community.
