London (HRNW)- A senior British minister has confirmed that British government systems were targeted in a cyber attack in October 2025. Minister of Commerce Chris Bryant admitted the infiltration during an interview with Times Radio, marking the first official government-level confirmation.
Bryant stated that while the attack occurred, it remains unclear whether it was directly carried out by Chinese hackers or actors linked to the Chinese state. He emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and it may take time for final results. The security flaw has since been fixed, and no large-scale misuse of data has been detected.
The incident comes amid speculation by The Sun that a Chinese-linked cyber group, Storm 1849, was responsible and that the breach may have accessed Foreign Office data, including visa application details. Bryant dismissed these claims as speculative and said the risk to individuals is low. The UK government has strengthened digital security measures to prevent future breaches.
The cyber attack follows other major cybersecurity incidents in the UK this year, including disruptions at Jaguar Land Rover and Marks & Spencer. Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated concerns over national security risks posed by China while defending ongoing engagement with the country.
