Yanbu (HRNW)- A Patriot air defense system operated by Greek military personnel in Saudi Arabia intercepted a group of drones near the wider Yanbu area, according to Greek security sources cited by Reuters.
The interception was carried out in coordination with Saudi air defenses. Greek personnel reportedly fired three Patriot missiles at the drones, although officials did not disclose how many drones were involved or how many were successfully shot down.
Authorities also did not immediately provide information about the origin of the drones or identify those responsible for launching them.
Yanbu is a strategically important coastal area and home to major Saudi oil-refining facilities, making any drone or missile incident in the region particularly sensitive for Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure and global oil supplies.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns over the security of military and energy facilities across the Gulf region as tensions and the threat of drone and missile attacks remain elevated.
