Netherlands (HRNW)- The Netherlands has recorded its hottest summer since regular temperature records began in 1901, with the average summer temperature at the country’s central meteorological station reaching 19.3°C.
The previous record was 18.9°C, recorded in 2018. The country also experienced an unusually high number of days with temperatures above 35°C, while several nights were exceptionally warm.
In June, temperatures reached 39.4°C, setting a new national record. During the intense heatwave, Dutch meteorological authorities issued a code red warning for extreme heat for the first time.
Experts have warned that increasingly frequent and prolonged heatwaves, unusually warm nights and drought conditions are concerning indicators of climate change. Meteorologist Pieter Zigmond said such extreme conditions could become more common in the future.
