Algeria (HRNW)- Forest fires spreading across northeastern Algeria amid a severe heatwave have killed at least 12 people and injured 54 others, with Jijel, Bejaia and Tizi Ouzou among the worst-affected provinces.
Interior Minister Said Syoudoud said five people were killed in Jijel, four in Bejaia and three in Tizi Ouzou. Authorities reported 154 fires in a single day, including 36 in Bejaia, where 18 have been brought under control.
At least 54 people are receiving treatment for burns, including six in critical condition, while dozens of families have been evacuated from areas threatened by the flames.
Dry conditions, strong winds and extreme temperatures have accelerated the spread of the fires. Experts say rising temperatures and drought conditions linked to climate change are increasing the risk of severe wildfires across North Africa.
