Karachi (HRNW) – Inspector General of Police Sindh Javed Alam Odho chaired an important review meeting regarding proposals for the establishment of a Digital Forensic Laboratory for Sindh Police at the Central Police Office Karachi.
The meeting was attended by the Additional Inspector General of Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Deputy Inspectors General of Headquarters, IT, T&T, Training, and other senior police officials.
During the meeting, the Project Director IT gave a detailed briefing on the proposed Digital Forensic Laboratory, including its scope, technical requirements, infrastructure needs, and the overall project framework.
According to the briefing, in the modern era, approximately 97% of investigative cases involve mobile phones, computers, and other digital devices as important sources of evidence, while globally, digital evidence plays a role in around 90% of criminal cases.
The meeting highlighted that due to the increasing importance of digital evidence in investigations, the establishment of a modern Digital Forensic Laboratory for Sindh Police has become essential. The need for amendments to the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act and development of advanced investigation mechanisms was also discussed.
IG Sindh Javed Alam Odho directed that the Digital Forensic Lab Committee, headed by the Additional IG CTD, should finalize its recommendations and proposals at the earliest.
He instructed that a comprehensive and practical plan should be prepared covering the objectives of the Digital Forensic Laboratory, organizational structure, manpower requirements, infrastructure, modern equipment, software, training needs, legal requirements, and financial estimates for approval.
IG Sindh stated that modern crimes cannot be effectively addressed through traditional methods alone. He emphasized that advanced technology, digital evidence, and scientific investigation methods are essential for effective and high-quality investigations.
He further stated that practical steps are being taken to transform Sindh Police into a modern, technology-driven, and professional police force, and the Digital Forensic Laboratory will be an important milestone in achieving this vision.
From a human rights perspective, modern and scientific investigation systems can contribute to fair justice, transparent investigations, and strengthening the rule of law. However, experts emphasize that the use of digital evidence must also ensure protection of citizens’ privacy, data security, and legal rights.
