COLCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM (HRNW) — The Essex Human Rights Centre and the Essex Armed Conflict and Crisis Hub at the University of Essex are set to host the “International Law in Armed Conflict” short course from 3–7 August 2026 at the University’s Colchester Campus. The specialised human rights training programme aims to strengthen understanding of the legal frameworks that protect civilians and affected populations during armed conflicts.
The five-day course has been designed for professionals working in the human rights, humanitarian and international law fields, as well as government officials, international organisation staff, postgraduate students and academics seeking practical knowledge about the rules governing warfare and protection of human dignity during conflict situations.
The programme addresses some of the most critical human rights challenges of modern conflicts, including protection of civilians, treatment of detainees, refugees and displaced persons, accountability mechanisms, international criminal law and the relationship between international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
HRNW understands that such educational initiatives play an important role in developing the skills of human rights defenders, legal professionals and humanitarian workers who contribute to protecting fundamental freedoms and ensuring accountability during periods of crisis.
The course will use expert-led lectures, interactive discussions and practical case studies to help participants understand how international legal principles are applied in real-world conflict environments. Successful participants will receive a University of Essex Human Rights Centre certificate.
