Karachi (HRNW) – The Sindh Police has issued new instructions requiring officers to obtain prior approval before participating in media briefings, interviews, and public forums in an official capacity. Under the directive, no police officer will be allowed to appear on media platforms without prior permission from the Inspector General of Sindh Police (IGP Sindh).
According to the issued guidelines, prior approval will be mandatory for participation in television and radio programs, podcasts, press conferences, and other media engagements. Participation in digital media platforms and other public forums while representing the police department will also require official authorization.
The instructions state that requests for media appearances must be submitted through the head of the concerned formation. Officers who receive approval will be required to restrict their comments to the officially approved agenda only.
The directive further prohibits the disclosure of sensitive information related to ongoing investigations, intelligence matters, and operational activities. Supervisory officers have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the guidelines, and violations may result in departmental action.
The instructions issued by the IGP Sindh have been circulated to all Additional Inspectors General (Addl. IGs), Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs).
Human Rights Perspective
Human Rights News Worldwide (HRNW) emphasizes that government institutions must maintain a careful balance between protecting sensitive information, ensuring operational security, promoting transparency, and respecting the public’s right to information.
In democratic societies, freedom of expression, media freedom, and institutional accountability are essential components of good governance. At the same time, law enforcement agencies have a legitimate responsibility to protect confidential investigative details, intelligence information, and operational security.
Human rights principles require that such policies should ensure responsible communication without creating unnecessary restrictions on transparency, public accountability, or access to information. Maintaining public trust requires both effective information management and respect for fundamental freedoms.
