Defiance of Judicial Orders; Contempt Petitions Over Imran Khan’s Prison Meetings Remain Pending

ISLAMABAD (HRNW): Despite a “historic” ruling by a larger bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) regarding a visitation mechanism for PTI founder Imran Khan, the orders remain unimplemented by Adiala Jail authorities. On March 24, 2025, a three-member bench led by Chief Justice Sarfaraz Dogar ordered that meetings be facilitated twice a week, specifically on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Judicial Remarks vs. Ground Realities:

During the high-profile hearing, Chief Justice Sarfaraz Dogar had addressed the Superintendent of Adiala Jail directly, stating, “Now we shall see how our order is not implemented; we know very well how to ensure compliance with our rulings.” However, legal sources report that since that date, not a single person from the lists provided to the jail administration has been granted a meeting, marking a total deadlock in the court-mandated process.

Contempt of Court Petitions:

The continuous defiance of the March 24 ruling has led to multiple contempt of court petitions filed against the Adiala Jail Superintendent. Today, Imran Khan’s focal person, Niazullah Niazi, moved a miscellaneous application seeking an early hearing for these contempt cases.

Legal Concerns Over Judicial Silence:

Legal circles have expressed surprise over the court’s perceived silence despite the blatant disregard for its authority. Lawyers for the petitioner have repeatedly informed the bench that the “sanctity of the court” is being compromised by executive non-compliance. The delay in fixing these contempt petitions for hearing has raised concerns regarding the enforcement of fundamental rights and the rule of law within the prison system.
