LAHORE (HRNW): In a major regulatory shift, the Punjab Traffic Police will begin issuing Juvenile Driving Permits for teenagers aged 16 to 18 starting March 1, 2026. The announcement was made by DIG Traffic Punjab, Waqas Nazir, who stated that the system has been fully upgraded to accommodate this new category of young drivers.
Requirements and Application Process
To bridge the gap between illegal underage driving and formal training, the government has set the following rules for applicants:
-
Fee: A standard processing fee of Rs. 500 has been fixed for the permit.
-
Mandatory Tests: All candidates must pass both the sign test and the road test to qualify.
-
Documentation: Applicants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The application requires a B-Form, a formal permission letter (affidavit/stamp paper) from the guardian, and the guardian’s CNIC.
Strict Operational Limits
The permit comes with specific restrictions to ensure road safety for inexperienced drivers:
-
Engine Capacity: Juvenile permit holders are strictly prohibited from riding motorcycles with an engine capacity exceeding 125cc.
-
Electric Vehicles: Similar power limits will apply to electric bikes.
-
Validity: The permit will automatically expire on the holder’s 18th birthday, at which point they must apply for a standard adult driving license.
This initiative is part of a broader crackdown on dangerous underage driving, shifting the focus from punishment to structured legal training. DIG Waqas Nazir emphasized that these measures are intended to protect the lives of young citizens and foster a culture of responsible driving from an early age.
