International Mountain Day Preserving Sindh’s Natural Heritage Gorakh Hill and Karoonjhar

Karachi (HRNW) As the world celebrates International Mountain Day, recognizing the beauty, importance, and ecological role of the planet’s great peaks, our attention turns to Sindh’s own mountains — the majestic Gorakh Hill and the enduring Karoonjhar Range. These landscapes remind us that the spirit of the mountains lives not only in the Himalayas but also in the heart of Sindh.

Rising 5,688 feet (1,734 meters) above sea level, Gorakh Hill stands tall in the Kirthar Range, near the Sindh–Balochistan border in Dadu District. Often called the “Murree of Sindh,” Gorakh offers a cool and tranquil escape from the province’s dry plains. In summer, temperatures hover between 20–25 °C, while winter nights bring a touch of frost — and sometimes even snowfall — a rare sight in southern Pakistan.

The name “Gorakh” carries deep historical and spiritual roots — some trace it to the ancient Hindu mystic Gorakhnath, while others connect it to local words meaning “shepherd” or “mountain of the herds.”
For centuries, this region has been a place of reflection, harmony, and connection with nature.

Sindh’s mountains are not just geological marvels — they are living ecosystems rich in minerals, history, and biodiversity. The Karoonjhar Hills in Tharparkar, for instance, are both beautiful and resource-rich, holding immense cultural and environmental value. Sadly, unregulated mining and stone-cutting have damaged the area, endangering wildlife, plants, and local communities.
Such actions remind us that exploiting nature in the name of progress threatens the very balance that sustains life.

The Gorakh Hills Development Authority was created to turn Gorakh Hill into a sustainable tourist destination. Yet, persistent administrative challenges, corruption, and incomplete infrastructure have limited its progress. Recent reports in 2025 reveal major financial losses and unfulfilled development goals — a stark reminder of the urgent need for transparency and commitment to environmental stewardship.

Gorakh Hill and Karoonjhar stand as symbols of Sindh’s hidden beauty — and as calls to action. They remind us that development must walk hand in hand with preservation, and that protecting nature is not a choice — it is a responsibility.
