Islamabad (HRNW)- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed in Parliament that 33 senior retired government officers who have moved abroad are receiving substantial pension payments in foreign currency.
According to documents cited in a private television report, the Government of Pakistan pays approximately Rs342.1 million annually to these retired officers, with the amounts transferred directly in the relevant foreign currencies.
The revelation has sparked debate among economic experts over the financial privileges of the bureaucracy and the burden of overseas pension payments on the national exchequer.
The ministry also stated that other retired officers living in different countries receive pensions in Pakistani rupees. However, complete details of all such pensioners are reportedly unavailable, creating uncertainty over the overall scale of payments.
Economic experts have called for a review of pension policies, particularly amid Pakistan’s foreign-exchange pressures, to assess whether reforms could reduce the burden on the country’s finances.
