US: Governor candidate Francesca Hong draws attention for criticizing Israel

New York (HRNW)- Francesca Hong, a Democratic state assembly member and candidate for governor of Wisconsin, has become the focus of political debate over her stance on Israel. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) has dubbed her the “Madhani of Wisconsin,” drawing a parallel with New York progressive politician Zohran Mamdani.

Hong, a former chef, community organizer and single mother, is centering her campaign on tackling inflation, supporting working-class families and criticizing U.S. support for Israel. At the launch of her campaign, she said the current system works against ordinary people and that she wants to become governor to change it.

Her position on Israel has drawn criticism from some Jewish voters in Wisconsin. Hong argues that supporting Palestinian rights should not be equated with antisemitism. She has accused Israel of genocide in Gaza and has pledged not to accept any financial support or campaign funds from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Meanwhile, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Hong later apologized for calling police over a December 2023 incident involving the defacement of an Israeli flag, saying she deeply regretted the decision. She said she later realized it was important to properly distinguish between anti-Israel protest and antisemitism.
