Karachi (HRNW) – An old residential house at Plot C‑3, Block 17, Federal B Area in Gulberg Town, Central District, has allegedly been converted into a commercial bank branch without proper approvals, prompting protests from local residents and civic groups.
According to local reports and sources, the property was transformed during the night and the site is now in the final stages of construction as a UBL commercial branch. Sources claim that since the appointment of Deputy Director Gulberg Town, Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), Kamal Mota, there has been a marked increase in illegal commercial constructions across several blocks of Gulberg Town. The reports allege that lakhs of rupees were taken in bribes to facilitate the unauthorized works.
The report further states that the commercial bank construction violates SBCA rules and that no formal approval or NOC was obtained. Residents say such unauthorized conversions risk undermining residential zoning, public safety and local living conditions.
Local community leaders have urged the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority, the Chief Secretary Sindh and the Minister for Local Government Nasser Hussain Shah to order an immediate transparent inquiry, demolish the illegal commercial structure if violations are confirmed, and take strict action against those responsible.
Human rights angle
HRNW emphasizes that violations of land‑use and building regulations run counter to public interest, residents’ rights and urban planning principles. Such allegations require independent, transparent investigations, appropriate legal remedies and protection of affected residents’ rights, and any claims of corruption or bribery should be thoroughly and impartially examined.
