Yangon (HRNW) – A humanitarian tragedy has unfolded off Myanmar’s coast after two boats carrying Rohingya refugees capsized; early reports say roughly 500 people are feared dead.
A joint statement from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said both vessels departed Rakhine State in late June. Most passengers were Rohingya refugees, while some had begun their journey from refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.
Reports indicate one boat was carrying about 250 people and the other around 280. Aid groups say very few survivors have been rescued so far, raising the prospect of large‑scale loss of life. Search‑and‑rescue teams continue operations along the coast, and authorities are still working to confirm the number of casualties and survivors.
Human rights angle
HRNW underscores that protecting migrants and refugees, ensuring prompt access to humanitarian assistance, and providing safe maritime routes are core international human‑rights and legal obligations. In such emergencies, survivors should receive medical care, shelter and equitable access to justice, and the causes of the fatalities should be investigated independently and transparently to help prevent future tragedies.
