Washington (HRNW) A new defense bill introduced in the United States Congress could significantly deepen military and technological cooperation between the United States and Israel, paving the way for closer collaboration in defense research, weapons development and advanced military technologies.
The proposal has been included in the draft of the US National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2027 under the title “US-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative.”
According to the proposed legislation, the US Secretary of Defense would appoint a dedicated official responsible for overseeing and coordinating all military cooperation projects between the United States and Israel.
If approved, the initiative would enable both countries to expand cooperation in areas including joint defense research, advanced weapons manufacturing, military systems integration, data sharing, artificial intelligence, drone technology and cyber operations.
Defense analysts say that the legislation could elevate US-Israel defense relations to a new level, moving beyond traditional military assistance toward deeper integration of the two countries’ defense industries and technological capabilities.
Former US State Department official Josh Paul criticized the proposal, arguing that it could grant Israel unprecedented access to American defense technologies and supply chains, potentially influencing future US defense policies.
The United States and Israel already cooperate on several major defense projects, including the joint development of missile defense systems such as the Iron Dome. The new proposal seeks to broaden that partnership into additional areas of advanced military and defense technology.
The bill still requires approval from both the US House of Representatives and the Senate. However, reports indicate that it has already gained support from influential lawmakers in both the Republican and Democratic parties.
