Karachi, Pakistan (HRNW)- The menace of illegal construction has once again reared its head in the historic area of Lyari, raising alarms over a potential repeat of past tragedies. A recent vigilance report has exposed a dangerous residential project on Plot 24/4, Mirza Adam Khan Road in Agra Taj Colony. According to the report, a ground-plus-four-story structure has already been erected on a tiny 60-square-yard plot, with work on a fifth floor currently in full swing.
The Assistant Director of the Vigilance Section revealed that this entire building is being constructed without any approved building plan or a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA). Local residents, however, claim the situation is even more dire, stating that seven stories have already been built. They allege that relevant authorities have turned a blind eye to this blatant violation, giving builders a free hand to risk lives for profit.
This development brings back haunting memories of July last year, when an illegal building collapsed in Lyari’s Baghdadi area, claiming 27 lives, including women and children. Shortly after that disaster, another seven-story illegal structure, Arha Arcade in Agra Taj Colony, developed cracks and had to be demolished by the district administration. Residents are now urgently calling upon the Commissioner Karachi and Deputy Commissioner South to take direct action before Lyari is struck by another preventable catastrophe.
