Damascus (HRNW)- Denmark has reopened its embassy in Damascus after nearly 14 years, marking a significant step toward strengthening diplomatic relations with Syria. The reopening ceremony was attended by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shaibani.
Denmark has appointed its first permanent ambassador to Syria since 2012. Rasmussen also announced an additional $76 million in assistance for Syria’s reconstruction, stabilization and refugee return efforts.
The two countries have also announced preparations for a bilateral partnership agreement, while direct flights between Damascus and Copenhagen are scheduled to begin on September 21.
According to Denmark, reopening the embassy is aimed at supporting Syria’s reconstruction and deepening diplomatic ties with Damascus. The move is being viewed as an important development in the gradual restoration of relations between Syria and European countries.
