Bishkek (HRNW)- Russian President Vladimir Putin met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, reaffirming Moscow’s support for Tehran amid ongoing tensions with the United States and Israel.
According to the report, Putin assured Pezeshkian of Russia’s support for the Iranian people and expressed determination to continue economic and trade relations with Iran despite US sanctions and current military and political tensions.
A statement from the Iranian presidency said the two leaders discussed further strengthening bilateral relations across various areas of mutual cooperation.
Russia’s decision to maintain and potentially expand economic ties with Iran comes as the United States threatens additional sanctions against countries conducting economic activities with Tehran. Such pressure could potentially affect Iran’s close partners, including Russia and China.
Cooperation between Moscow and Tehran has expanded in recent years across areas including defense, energy, trade and regional affairs, despite Western sanctions and geopolitical tensions.
