Canberra (HRNW)– Senator Pauline Hanson of Australia’s hard-right party attempted to introduce a bill to ban the burqa in public places, but was blocked from doing so, angering her. In protest, she entered the assembly hall wearing a burqa herself, which led to a heated reaction from Muslim senators who called her actions racist and provocative. The situation became so tense that the speaker had to suspend proceedings.

This marks the second time Hanson has used the burqa as a political tactic in parliament to push for a public ban.
