UN Imposes Sanctions on 22 Senior Taliban Leaders Over Human Rights Concerns

Kabul (HRNW)- The Afghan Taliban group has been described by human rights organizations as a serious threat to global peace and human rights, amid ongoing concerns over restrictions on women and minority communities in the country.

According to the Afghan newspaper Hasht Subh, the Human Rights Activists Alliance welcomed the United Nations’ decision to impose strict sanctions on the Taliban. The UN Security Council has reportedly sanctioned 22 senior Taliban members, calling it an important step toward accountability.

The sanctions include several senior officials, including Interim Prime Minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund and Foreign Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani. Britain has also updated its sanctions list in line with the UN Security Council’s decision.

Defense experts say the Taliban’s current policies have turned Afghanistan into a potential safe haven for extremist networks, increasing security risks across South and Central Asia. The UN sanctions reflect continued international concern over human rights violations and regional stability.
