Greece Deadly Boat Accident Claims 15 Lives Amid Migrant Crossing

Chios (HRNW)- One of the deadliest migrant boat accidents in recent years occurred off the coast of Chios, Greece, when a migrant boat collided with a Greek coast guard ship. The 8-meter boat, reportedly overloaded with more than 39 passengers, capsized after the collision, throwing passengers into the sea. Rescue operations saved 25 people, but 14 drowned and one later died in hospital. Women and children were among the victims. Greek Immigration Minister Thanos Pleuris blamed human traffickers for the tragedy, emphasizing the dangers faced by migrants attempting illegal crossings. Five coast guard boats and a helicopter were involved in the rescue operations. Chios and other Greek islands remain major transit points for migrants from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
