Kathmandu/Tibet (HRNW): Devastating floods and landslides in Nepal and China’s Tibet region have killed at least 750 people, while more than 3,000 people remain missing, according to the latest figures cited by authorities.
Search-and-rescue operations are continuing along the Nepal-Tibet border. However, damaged roads and bridges, rising water levels, debris and difficult weather conditions are creating major challenges for rescue teams.
In Tibet, Chinese authorities have reported 16 deaths and 546 missing people in Gyirong County. The missing include 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries, including Nepali, Indian, British, American, Latvian and Canadian citizens.
Authorities have informed the respective embassies and consulates about the missing foreign nationals.
The floods and landslides have caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, homes, electricity infrastructure and other essential facilities in the affected areas. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate missing people and evacuate those stranded by the disaster.
Meanwhile, Nepal’s authorities have warned residents living near the Bhote Koshi River to remain alert as water levels have risen. People in vulnerable areas have been advised to move to safer locations if conditions deteriorate.
The disaster has also affected important tourist and religious areas in northern Nepal, where powerful floodwaters and debris swept through communities.
The United States has announced $3.6 million in humanitarian assistance for flood victims, including emergency food assistance for around 10,000 affected families for three months.
