Lahore (HRNW): Authorities have reportedly launched a major crackdown on individuals allegedly posing as journalists, with PEMRA and Punjab Police initiating action against people accused of operating fake media platforms, using fraudulent press cards and engaging in blackmail and fraud.
According to officials, several individuals have been detained in different districts, while investigations are being expanded into alleged misuse of fake press credentials and the names of unregistered media platforms.
Authorities said cases are being registered against individuals allegedly involved in blackmailing, fraud and other unlawful activities while posing as journalists, with further arrests expected as the investigation progresses.
Officials are also examining the credentials of individuals claiming affiliation with media organizations and verifying the legal status of the platforms they represent.
However, the absence of a journalism degree alone does not necessarily establish that a person is not a journalist, as professional journalism may also involve practical experience, independent reporting and different forms of media affiliation.
Authorities said organizations and individuals found violating applicable PEMRA laws may face fines and further legal action in accordance with the law.
