Karachi (HRNW) —: Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho chaired a high-level meeting at the Central Police Office in Karachi to review the overall law-and-order situation and security arrangements across the province.
The meeting was attended by senior police officials, including Additional Inspectors General, DIGs, AIGs and SSPs, while zonal and divisional DIGs and district SSPs participated through video link.
The participants were briefed on the overall security situation in Karachi and other parts of Sindh. The meeting also reviewed security arrangements for Operation Nijat-e-Maheran, foreign nationals, Rabi-ul-Awwal gatherings, major events and public religious assemblies.
The IGP directed authorities to adopt extraordinary security measures in Karachi in view of the prevailing situation and upcoming public gatherings. He also ordered more effective snap checking, patrolling and police picketing, with strict monitoring of suspicious activities.
Javed Alam Odho directed police officials to maintain vigilance in the riverine areas and monitor criminal elements and their possible networks, while ensuring strict and indiscriminate action against elements threatening law and order.
He stressed that police officers and personnel must remain fully alert until crime is brought under control and directed senior officers to personally inspect security arrangements in the field.
The IGP further warned that any negligence in the security of foreign nationals would not be tolerated and instructed officers to properly brief subordinate personnel and ensure effective supervision of officers deployed on duty.
Human Rights Perspective
From a human rights perspective, effective law-and-order measures should ultimately serve to protect citizens’ lives, dignity, liberty, property and fundamental rights. Security operations and crime-control measures must remain within the framework of law and be implemented transparently and without discrimination.
During snap checking, searches, arrests and other security measures, law-enforcement agencies have a responsibility to respect due process, human dignity and citizens’ constitutional rights while maintaining public safety.
