Dhaka (HRNW) – Bangladeshi authorities have announced the seizure of assets reportedly worth US$6.2 billion (approximately 760 billion Bangladeshi Taka) allegedly linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her family, and several major business groups.
According to officials, the seized assets are connected to Sheikh Hasina, members of her family, and 10 business conglomerates. Authorities stated that legal action has been taken against assets located both within Bangladesh and, where applicable, overseas.
Bangladeshi media reported that investigations into Sheikh Hasina’s assets began after the student-led public movement of 2024, which resulted in her removal from office and subsequent departure to India.
The reports further state that investigators are examining the financial activities of her close relatives and several large business groups alleged to have received extraordinary benefits during her approximately 15-year tenure in office.
As of the time of reporting, no detailed public response from Sheikh Hasina or her legal representatives regarding the reported asset seizures and allegations has been noted.
Human Rights Perspective
Human Rights News Worldwide (HRNW) emphasizes that investigations into alleged corruption and illicit assets should be conducted independently, transparently, impartially, and in accordance with the rule of law.
Every individual, regardless of public office or status, is entitled to the presumption of innocence, due process, legal representation, and a fair trial. At the same time, where evidence supports allegations of unlawful enrichment or misuse of public resources, effective accountability and lawful asset recovery serve the public interest and reinforce confidence in democratic institutions.
