Shan State (HRNW)- At least 55 people, including 25 women, were killed and dozens injured in a powerful explosion in Myanmar’s Shan State, according to foreign media reports and local sources.
The explosion occurred in the Kyauk Taw area, where separatist groups said materials stored for use in mining activities detonated unexpectedly, causing widespread destruction.
The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which is engaged in conflict with Myanmar’s military government, said in a statement that the blast was an accident that resulted in multiple deaths and injuries, while also causing significant damage to nearby civilian homes.
The group expressed condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. It also announced that an investigation had been launched to determine the exact cause of the explosion and identify those responsible.
According to the TNLA, immediate assistance will be provided to the affected families, and appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is completed.
Local media reported that the victims included 25 women and 30 men, while eyewitnesses described the explosion as so powerful that it sounded similar to an airstrike.
Authorities and local organizations are continuing relief efforts as the region copes with the aftermath of the tragedy.
