Karachi Street Crime Surge: Alarming Rise in Motorcycle Theft and Snatching

KARACHI (HRNW): Street crime in Karachi has once again escalated to a dangerous level, with a concerning increase in motorcycle snatching and theft incidents recorded this month. The surge has spread fear among citizens, as several areas are increasingly viewed as safe havens for criminal elements.

According to recent reports and data, the situation across various districts is as follows:

  • Worst Affected Areas: Gulshan-e-Maymar and Surjani Town in District West are among the hardest-hit areas, where dozens of citizens have been deprived of their motorcycles at gunpoint.

  • District East & Highways: Numerous snatching incidents have been reported from the Super Highway and its surrounding areas in District East.

  • Police Station Rankings: Several police stations in District Central and East have become hubs for consistent criminal activity, while the Gulshan-e-Maymar and Surjani police stations in the West Zone are ranked at the top of the list for reported crimes.

  • CPLC Data (March 2026): According to recent data from the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), a total of 3,467 motorcycles were stolen or snatched across Karachi during March 2026. Out of these, 440 motorcycles were snatched specifically at gunpoint.

Citizens have expressed frustration, noting that dacoits flee easily after snatching motorcycles in broad daylight, while police actions appear ineffective. Many victims alleged that despite the rise in crime, there has been no visible increase in police patrolling.
