Karachi (HRNW) — Major financial irregularities have been uncovered in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Department of Medical and Health Services’ budget for the fiscal year 2024–25. According to sources, machinery purchased in May and June 2025 for the Sarfaraz Rafiqui Shaheed Hospital never reached the facility, despite being listed as delivered in official procurement records.
Sources revealed that contractors were paid over Rs. 5 million for the machinery. In May 2025, Rs. 800,000 was paid for operation theater equipment, while in June 2025, Rs. 4.45 million was disbursed for an operation table and diathermy model machine — yet none of these items were supplied to the hospital.
Similarly, Rs. 18.3 million was allocated for repairing the MRI machine and purchasing related equipment for Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, but the machine remains nonfunctional despite full payment.
According to sources, the lack of transparency in fund utilization and procurement processes has led to significant financial discrepancies, raising serious questions about the performance and oversight of the concerned officials.
